FAQ

AdiCell treatment questions

Before and after an AdiCell treatment

What is AdiCell?

AdiCell is an advanced but simple treatment for osteoarthritis in dogs. AdiCell uses your dog’s fat cells to heal an arthritic joint, such as a hip or knee. It is a same day procedure. With liposuction, an accredited veterinarian removes a small sample of fat tissue from your dog’s abdomen. Our lab technician then separates the stem cells in the fat, selecting those that naturally heal damaged tissue.

After purification, the veterinarian injects the healing stem cells directly into your dog’s arthritic joint. The results to date have been excellent.

What are the risks of general anaesthetic?

An accredited team takes the utmost care to reduce any risk to your pet during the procedure. The team performs blood tests beforehand. This is to ensure your pet does not have any underlying diseases that could complicate the procedure. During the procedure the team monitors the condition of your pet using an ECG, a pulse oximeter, a heart rate monitor and a respiration monitor. A veterinary nurse monitors the animal during anaesthetic and recovery.

Will there be a wound from removing the fat?

Under a general anaesthetic, the veterinarian makes a small incision to remove about 20 grams of fat. The wound is sealed with a couple of stitches. There may be some swelling and bruising around the area of the incision. Generally this reduces a couple of days after the AdiCell procedure.

What is involved in putting the stem cells into the joint?

Whilst your pet is still asleep the stem cells are injected with a needle into the joint. A veterinary nurse will shave a small area around the joint to allow it to be sterile. There is no wound.

How many treatments will be required?

With AdiCell your dog requires one treatment only. On the day of the procedure we carry out  X-rays. This ensures we treat all arthritic joints at the same time. You will not need to come back for more treatments.

Is there a risk of tumour using stem cells?

No, there is no risk as Regeneus uses your dog’s own cells.

How soon before I start seeing results?

The effects of an AdiCell treatment vary in each case. In many dogs treated, improvement is seen within 7 days. This is due to the anti-inflammatory effects of the stem cells injected into arthritic joints. Continued improvement is often seen several months after treatment.

What are the side effects with AdiCell?

As AdiCell uses stem cells from an animal’s own body, there are no side effects. It is a natural, chemical free procedure.

What kind of bedding is best for my dog before treatment and during the healing process?

Bedding should be medium to soft. This way your dog can impress into the bedding and avoid moving about on a hard bed to get comfortable.

A slightly elevated bed is ideal. It should be about 10 cm off the ground. This means your dog steps down off the bed, stretching the hips rather than flexing them to rise up.
